I have struggled for many years to stabilize my health. I had always been pretty healthy, and really had very few aches and pains and very few health problems. But all of that changed in 1990 when I was involved in a near-fatal car crash in Salt Lake City over the Christmas holidays. We had driven to Salt Lake to see my in-laws. A week after we got there, a 16 year old girl ran a red light at approximately 50 miles per hour and slammed into the mainframe of the car just before the drivers side door. I had a seat belt on. The seat belt saved my life, but it also caused some of the injuries that I sustained. I have spent the last 27 years battling all kinds of health issues, many caused by that accident. Of course, there is another whole story about that which I will not go into right now. I have spent the last 27 years trying to figure out what my health is worth.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
About 5 years ago, I started having bowel problems. It started out minor, but over about a year it turned into a huge problem. I was very sick almost all day, every day, and I had severe stomach cramping that never seemed to let up. I tolerated this condition for about a year, thinking it would resolve itself. Unfortunately, it did not. I then reached out to doctors. At that time, I was basically told that I had Irritable Bowel Syndrome and there was not much that could be done. There were guidelines on what to eat and what not to eat, what made it better or worse, but not really a magic pill or solution to the problem. So once again, I am on autopilot trying to figure out how to get my life under control?? And I cannot seem to find anyone that can help me solve this problem.
Then one day my husband was listening to a local doctor in the Santa Cruz area. She has a talk show on the radio. We have grown to respect her as a doctor as she seems to really know what she is talking about. She is extremely knowledgeable in many subjects and spends a tremendous amount of time researching and drawing conclusions on what will actually help sick individuals.
Will ProBiotics Help Me?
One of her top recommendations for any kind of stomach problems is to take Probiotics. I had heard of them, but not really paid much attention to them. Initially, I just thought it would just be more pills to take. I am not a big advocate of drugs, and try to take the minimal amount of them possible. But at this point, I was DESPERATE! I had been suffering relentlessly for almost 3 years, and I needed to find something that might help alleviate some of the symptoms. Of course, I would have liked to completely get rid of this disorder, but that was probably not going to happen! So I needed something to just help control some of the symptoms. I was so desperate, at this point, that I was willing to try almost anything!
This doctor had a local office. I called her and arranged to go by her office to pick up a bottle of Probiotics that she sold. She had done all of the research and knew exactly what formulation would work. I decided to purchase these from her, even though they were not cheap. But if something could give me even a small amount of relief, then I was willing to give it a try. The Probiotics she sold cost over $50.00 per bottle and that was for 60 tablets. The instructions suggest you take 2 per day, but I decided I would start with 1 per day and see if it would help. I also was aware of the fact that Probiotics usually take one to two months BEFORE they offer any relief.
My Probiotics Journey
I actually was excited to start the Probiotics. Just the hope that there might be relief at the end of the tunnel intrigued me. I knew that waiting another month or two might be depressing, but I had to start somewhere. And the sooner I started, the sooner I would find out if they worked. I started taking them that very night. I would eat dinner, wait about 30 minutes, and then take one Probiotic tablet. I did this every night for almost a month. On about the 24th day, I started to notice that the cramping had let up quite a bit, especially in the morning. My stomach had hurt almost 24/7 for three years. FINALLY!! I was getting relief! This really gave me high hopes. If these worked, I might actually get my life back!
I took Probiotics religiously for two months straight. With each dose, I noticed that I was having fewer stomach and cramping problems. OMG!! Spending approximately $1.00/day for a Probiotic tablet was slowly changing my life! At the end of the two months, my condition had improved about 80%. That was good enough for me. Being sick only 1/5 of the time drastically affected the quality of my life. I now could go places and actually felt like and wanted to go places! I could also eat some foods that I thought I would never enjoy ever again! I had pretty much given up hopes of being able to go out to dinner with family or friends. I would get so sick it just was not worth it! Now, if I ate those foods in small quantities, they would barely affect me. In the past, before Probiotics, if I ate certain foods, they would cause me to be doubled over with pain, sometimes for 2 or 3 days. Sometimes I would get very, very sick. And sometimes, I would still eat some of those foods knowing that I was going to get very sick. I would always weigh the fact that I was going to be sick with what I was going to miss if I did not go to dinner. I would usually go to dinner and end up sick. I know it sounds stupid, but sometimes I just wanted to pretend I was normal, even if it was just during dinner.
At this point, I have now been on Probiotics for about 4 years. Even though they are expensive, they are imperative for my health. I have gone off of them a couple of times, usually when we could not afford them. And, of course, I have gotten very sick each time. Each time I have gone off, it has taken at least a month to get back on track. So now I am completely reliant on Probiotics. I refuse to give them up! They are my lifeline. I am now at the point where I have my stomach under control for the most part.
There are some requirements, per our doctor, for purchasing Probiotics. The first requirement is that you should purchase Probiotics that need to be refrigerated. Since Probiotics are living organisms, they need to be kept in the refrigerator. They need to be kept under temperature control to maintain potency. Also, when you remove them from the refrigerator, you should take them within a couple of minutes. The second requirement is that they should be taken with food. If you look them up on the internet, you will find all kinds of advice on when to take. Some say with food and some say without food. I prefer to take mine with food, and so far, that has worked for me. I also take mine at night after dinner. Again, this seems to work for me.
I take Probiotics made by Metagenics. The specific name is “UltraFlora IB”. This is a 50-50 Blend of 60 Billion live organisms. The first half of the blend is Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM and the second half of the blend is Bifidobacterium lactic Bi-07.. Probiotics are a clinically tested blend of friendly bacteria in a dairy-free base. Probiotics are used to relieve gastrointestinal problems such as cramping, bloating, and abdominal discomfort.
Will Probiotics Change Your Life?
These little pills have changed my life! Even though I still have issues, I only have them approximately 1/5 of the time. THAT I can live with! If you have any gastrointestinal issues, I would suggest you try Probiotics. What is your health worth? Also, if you have any questions, concerns or comments, Please leave me a message or comment. I would love to hear from you!
